Equal Educational Opportunity
Federal and state laws prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, religion, or disability. MAYA provides a nondiscriminatory learning and work environment ensuring that all students and staff are free from unlawful discrimination. A lack of English language skills will not be a barrier to admission and participation in the education programs of the school. This commitment extends to all school programs and school sponsored events. A full copy of the grievance procedure is available from the school leader. In the event a student experiences discrimination, the student should report the incident to the school leader within ten (10) school days. The inability of a student to speak English should not prevent the student from reporting a violation. Every reasonable measure to interpret a non-English speaker’s concerns will be taken.
Campus Policies
The following policies are enforced at Maya High School for the purpose of maintaining a safe, drug-free learning environment:
Disrespect
Disrespect to teachers, staff members, as well as fellow students, will not be tolerated. This includes the use of racist, sexist, obscene language or gestures in the classroom, on class work, on campus as well as a disrespectful attitude when addressing staff members or fellow students.
Closed Campus Policy
Maya High School operates a closed campus policy and ditching will not be tolerated. Students who become ill or have an emergency must report to the office and sign out before leaving the campus. All students under the age of 18 must receive parental permission before leaving.
Personal Electronic Equipment
Maya High School is considered a Cell Phone Free Zone. Students are expected to check in and out their cell phones in each class. Students who are caught with an electronic device will be referred to administration. Students will not receive telephone calls during school hours; emergency calls from parents will be taken and students informed immediately. Students can use the front office phone if there is an emergency or need with a pass.
No Gang Activity or Association
Maya High School strictly enforces a zero tolerance policy towards any type of gang activity or association on campus. This includes hand gestures/signs, clothing, belt buckles, T-shirts, handkerchiefs, emblems, writing graffiti, etc.
Illegal Possession · No Weapons
Any actions involving the possession, use, or sale of any type of drug, alcohol, or other controlled substances will result in notification of authorities. Weapons, or any dangerous item, are not allowed on campus. This includes look-alikes and replicas.
Fighting
Fighting on our campus, or school related areas such as bus stops or adjacent businesses will not be tolerated. If a student anticipates a problem of any type, he or she should contact the principal or assistant principal immediately.
Conduct & Campus Care
Gambling in any form is not allowed on campus. Vandalism is forbidden — any destruction of school property by a student is the financial responsibility of the parent/guardian. Verbal abuse, mocking, extortion, threats and intimidation, or any conduct that will endanger the health and safety of fellow students or staff members will not be tolerated. Sunflower seeds are not allowed on campus; students will throw trash in trashcans and help keep the campus litter free.
Attire · Teacher Availability
Students are expected to dress appropriately. Any attire which is inappropriate or distracts from the school program will not be tolerated. Hats are not allowed. Teachers are available before and after class to communicate with parents — appointments are preferred.
Dress Code
Please dress appropriately — here’s what’s not permitted.
Please dress appropriately. If any staff member feels or believes you are not dressed appropriately, you will be asked to change into different clothing. The following dress attire is not permitted at Maya High School:
- Skirts or shorts that are too short, crop tops, or see-through clothing, including leggings
- Spaghetti straps, muscle shirts or tops that show too much cleavage
- Hoods over heads
- Bandanas, durags or hairnets
- Clothing that can be gang related or have inappropriate images
About
Attendance
Maya High School believes there is a clear and positive correlation between student learning and consistent and prompt attendance in class. The regular school attendance of a student is required by Arizona law.
Students are required to attend ninety percent (90%) of each course, each block, in order to receive course credit. The school runs on a block schedule, 34-39 days per block, 3 classes per day, and 1 hour and 55 minutes per class in order to receive credit.
A student who abuses the attendance policy will meet with our Dropout Prevention Coordinator and their attendance monitored.
Parents/Guardians will be contacted for a meeting to review attendance, if the absences continue, it could lead to a schedule change for the student.
Absences: In order to receive credit for a course, a student must attend class each day and complete all work required at a level that is acceptable by the teacher. Attendance is mandatory! Arizona State law requires attendance 90% of the time to receive credit. If a student is absent on any day of the week, he or she is required to come in during Focus Friday prior to that week ending. If a student is absent more than 12 days at the end of the block, may result in loss of course credit. These criteria meet the state requirements for class attendance/earned credit.
Parent Notification - Absences: All absences will be phoned into the office. If the school does not receive a phone call by the guardian/parent regarding the student's absence, then the school will notify the parent to verify the absence.
